Assembly cut, rough cut and fine cut: what each stage is for

By Eran Strassburg · Updated 2026-10-10

The short answer

An assembly puts the usable material in order. A rough cut makes the story work: what is in, what is out, and in what sequence. A fine cut polishes timing, picture and sound. Story decisions belong to the rough cut, because changing the structure after the fine cut means redoing the polish. FirstCut works on the assembly and rough-cut stages and hands the fine cut to your editor.

What each stage decides

StageQuestion it answersWhat you changeWhat you ignore
AssemblyWhat do we have?Which takes are usable, in rough orderPacing, length, transitions
Rough cutWhat is the story?Structure, order, what stays and what goesFrame-accurate timing, color, sound mix
Fine cutHow does it feel?Trims, rhythm, B-roll, music, graphicsThe structure, which should be settled

Signs you are polishing too early

  • You are adjusting a cut by a few frames in a scene that may not survive.
  • You have added music and B-roll, and now a section has to move.
  • Reviewers comment on the color while nobody can say what the piece is about.
  • Every note about structure makes you hesitate, because of the work it would undo.

What "locked story" means

A story is locked when the order of the beats and the choice of clips will not change again. Length can still move by small amounts. Locking the story is the handoff point between the rough cut and the fine cut, and it is the right moment to move from a story tool to your NLE.

Where a pre-editor fits

A pre-editor works before the NLE, on the first two stages. It reads the material, proposes a selection and an order, and lets you change both quickly. FirstCut is a pre-editor of the narrative kind: the cut is a list of beats, each made of real clips, and it plays in the browser.

The comparison with tools that render a finished file is in pre-editor or cloud video editor.

What to hand to the finishing editor

Hand over a timeline, not a rendered video. A timeline file holds the list of clips with their source timecodes and points at the original media, so the fine cut starts from full-quality footage. FirstCut exports FCPXML, FCP7-XML, CMX3600 EDL and OTIO. Which one to choose is covered in EDL, FCP7-XML, FCPXML and OTIO.

Questions

How long should a rough cut be?

Often somewhat longer than the target, because trimming is the fine cut's job. What matters is that the structure is right.

Is a rough cut the same as a paper edit?

A paper edit is the plan on paper. A rough cut is that plan in playable form.

Does FirstCut do the fine cut?

No. It covers the story and rough-cut stage and exports a timeline for the fine cut in your editor.
